The Egnome by myceliae The Egnome by myceliae
Presenting: The Egnome.

I caught this hairy fella a-munching away, happily gorging himself on a good hearty Irish fairy tale - The Tale of Oisín's Mother.

The cheek! Ink smudges all over one of my most treasured books too, a version illustrated by Rackham.

After I repremanded him, we had a little chat... and he told me - with twinkling eyes and a happy smile - that letters from the Old Tales always taste the best. Tales with Truth, with some history... ones that had been told by firesides and into the ears of sleepy children.
I couldn't feel too bad about it after that.
Who can begrudge a love of the Old Tales, after all? (As long as he keeps his inky fingers off my books, that is!!).

I had to ask him if it was necessary to upend a bottle of my ink over the book, though. Cheeky thing told me that he nearly lost his feet in excitement when he came across my workbench, he couldn't contain himself. Ink and Stories and Old Tales, oh!
"Ink doos make eh noice snacking, ye'see, a bit'eh extra flavoor on th' Ol Tale letters, loike a bit'eh salt on egg-loike."

My graphite drawing of the Egnome is 18x21 cms (or 7x8 inches, roughly), on Arches Hotpress WC paper.

Oh he is a most marvelous creature! But as you say, the cheek! Smudging the best works. I wonder, does he owe you a favor for the damage he did? Does he possess some magic he might bring to your aid some time?

Oh don't I know this little fella, or his relatives anyways. They chewed their way into my "people of the sea", a book on the Selkie and other sea Fairies. Grrrr. Happy you worked out some conducive dialogue with him though.

An amazing drawing with such feeling and uniqueness, your perfection in the letter structure and the perspective is awe inspiring.

I think I must hit that "add to favourites" button now.

Or something :D

He looks very audacious, and to allow him to munch your books is very forgiving and generous of you. I don't know if I could be so noble. Even little children know not to spill the ink, and tearing up books is just not done, no matter how tasty they are. He is cute, but I must confess I would have swatted him off my desk, and given him a people Magazine to munch on. :) Sweet drawing, and I love his impish face. Annie

Ah well.. maybe, maybe not. *grin*.
He's a charmer.. no doubt about that.
(I'm still not convinced that he's done lasting damage, there are faint tracings of the letters that remain, perhaps Old Stories are not quite as hard to forget as we might think.....?)
