Something a little different from me. But perhaps not all that different, really.

If only in technique.

I started this off as an experiment - or test - to see if I could manage to create what was swimming about in my head. Actually for the background of a different piece. That one next, now that I know I can do it.

This piece different in technique in the way that it wasn't planned at all. I had a vague idea, dark glowy forest. And I knew I wanted to negative-paint a lot of it. So I started off with mixing a well of my favourite combination of the moment, then masked off my page edges, wet it down, cringed inwardly, and joyfully poured the whole well full onto the paper. A few splatters and a bit of a splodge-at with some paper towel.. I forced myself to not mess with it into how I thought it should "look", and walk away until it was dry.

What I was left with was a glorious page of rich intense dark and still-bright glowing areas. My colours had seperated a little, the heavier blue pigments settling into the darkest areas, and the bright greens coming through the light.

I only had to look at it for a few moments to know what was going to happen. Brighter areas suggested glowing areas glimpsed at through trees, more mottly areas screamed out to become foliage. It was all in there.... all I had to do was define it.

It was such a different approach to painting for me, that at first it was joyful. It was like dancing with the paint and textures - not being slave to the "right" shapes and fussing over "does this look right?". There WAS no right, no wrong... just what was there naturally.
At first, yes, it was joy (and still is, I suppose), but I have to admit that I did get a little bored. Not because it was easy or borING, but because there was little challenge.

Ah, dichotomous brain.

Very nice!  I like the binding.  Do you make your own paper too?
